Disclaimer: Read with an open and calm mind..If you are full of hot air in head, you might as well burst open....
Doctors are assaulted and beaten so many times in our Indian government hospitals...Recent incidence in Lok Nayak Hospital has shaken whole medical fraternity and had raised this issue with a whole new perspective..This crime must be condemned at all possible levels and govt must look into this matter seriously so that such things don't happen in future.
Causes of such incidences are obvious : Lack of security inside hospital, apathy of hospital administration towards resident doctors, general attitude of public towards doctors and sorry to say but many times doctor himself....
I am not arguing against the first three reasons which give rise to such incidence because they are in the core of whole situation...But in this post, I am talking about us, the doctors being the main trigger of such incidences...
So much has already been written and circulated about the miserable conditions a doctor has to face and how they are not valued in society like older times today but I am talking about the other side...A mirror to us, the doctors..
Just try to put yourself in patient's shoe (it's difficult but atleast try)..
Go to any emergency/casualty of any hospital and you will confront a scene of complete chaos and anarchy...patients writhing in pain everywhere, people laying on floor, tables or any absurd inch of space they can find..One or two young doctors completely surrounded by patients , all screaming on top of their lungs...nurses and other supporting staff laughing, making tea and busy filling registers instead of tending to patients....
You alongwith your sick kin enter the room clueless about how to proceed...You ask someone for help, nobody listens...You ask nurse about directions, she screams back on you..You somehow spot the doctor, and try to talk to him but he can't hear you, he is so busy....After a while when you get to him, he also screams at you cause you don't have "hospital parcha" (registration slip) made...Nobody told you in first place that it has to be made...All this while, the condition of your kin deteriorates...You still somehow manage the queue, the parcha thing, the crowd and finally get to doctor...
Doctor also screams and scolds you and patient on speaking every damn sentence because according to him , the patient is speaking irrelevant things and rubbish...But how is a patient supposed to know what is relevant and what is not?? Pardon him/her if he is not as educated as a doctor is...
Sometimes doctors go on to the extent of calling patient , the age of their grand parents "moron" and "fool"...Many times, they just touch the patient and dismiss him as feigning the disease or call it a complete drama and again with lots of anger, shouting and disgust....
Even if, it's just psychological still patient or relatives don't know it and they do feel the pain.. Don't get me even started on what goes on inside labor rooms behind restricted entry zones...Everyone knows how patients in insufferable labor pain are behaved with..Everyone of us must have witnessed disgusting scenes of cruelty with patients, which I can't even describe on this public platform..
Such things compel them to be violent and threaten the doctor or raise their hands...More often than not, this gets their work done easily...Afterall movies like WANTED, MUNNABHAI MBBS and many others also have scenes where hero gets treatment for his girlfriend easily by threatening doctor..
Just to make it clear, such kind of harsh doctors are just a fraction of whole medical community, the way only a few out of so many patient are goons and criminal type..
As per doctors, they are not at fault because they are so overloaded with patients and work..
Agree, but does that really work as a good excuse for showing the kind of behavior you show?? A little sympathy with patients in pain and some sweet words of assurance instead of harsh screaming can avert majority of such incidences...A doctor is supposed to be a softspoken, pleasant and angel like person and it's often unacceptable to see him/her so ignorant and apathetic towards his patients...I know it's not easy to keep cool in the conditions prevailing in our hospitals but there is no other way...We don't have an option about it...
Ideally adequate infrastructure, less crowd, more doctors and better facilities can only cure this problem...But till that happens, we have to take that extra steps, that extra effort, that extra compassion which is comforting to our patients...Consider such incidences as occupational hazards and till govt and authorities do some concrete arrangements, the onus of our safety and security lies on us...
I know, the thing I talked about makes hardly 10-20% contribution to the cause of such incidences but it's still worth talking about...Many other people are doing commendable job on rest 90%..
